Persons with disabilities are unfortunately still a marginalized group facing challenges such as stigma and discrimination, inaccessible environments and exclusion during their school years which results in low educational levels.
Western Cape APD believes and recognises that building skills in persons with disabilities is key and essential for economic empowerment and independent living. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities states that skills development and education leads to the βfull development of human potential and fosters a sense of self-worth and dignityβ. WCAPD is therefore committed to ensuring that skills development in the form of community-living skills, trade skills and interpersonal skills are an integral part of our services.
One of our focus areas is therefore to upskill persons with disabilities in whatever way needed, to enable them to become as independent as possible.Β This may include life-skills sessions, work skills training, assisting with finding and enrolling in suitable learnerships and other courses or learning new craft or other skills which could lead to generating an income.
