The coastal zones of our country are protected areas and legislation prevents the use of motor vehicles on beaches. While wheelchair users are permitted to use a power or manual wheelchair on South Africa’s beautiful beaches, it is often extremely difficult to get onto the beach without a vehicle.
These permits are allocated by the Department of Environmental Affairs, while the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities and their provincial associations merely certify that the applicant has a disability.
Criteria
The person must have a substantial mobility impairment which makes it impossible for them to gain access to the beach from the parking lot without a vehicle.
