Since the national disaster and lockdown began in March, the work of Change Ability in the Stellenbosch area also had to change.
Social distancing forced finding new ways to support people with disabilities by:
• Using WhatsApp groups to share relevant support and health information.
• Posting tips and more on Facebook.
• Phoning individual beneficiaries to establish their most pressing needs.
• Partnering with Stellenbosch University in the making and distribution of ‘exercise at home’ videos.
Wonderful support was also received from a local initiative called Stellenbosch Unite.
In conjunction with the local municipality and civil society, they made food parcels available to Stellenbosch-based NGOs. As of today, we continue to collect food parcels from their offices weekly, and deliver them directly to our beneficiaries in greatest need.
Stellenbosch Unite volunteers also made and distributed about 1500 masks to essential workers, old age homes and NPOs. We received 50 of these to hand out.
