The Covid-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic impact on the services and financial stability of welfare organisations.
As a direct result of financial unsustainability, the Paarl Stimulation Centre for Children with Disabilities had to close down at the end of November 2020.
To ensure that those children would continue to receive services, APD started a new ‘Milani’ day care centre. The Xhosa word for ‘be firm in faith’,is Milani.
The centre currently accommodates 28 children with dsiabilities from Wellington, Mbekweni and Paarl. It is also open to children from the Franschhoek Valley. The majority of the children come from single parent families where the only income is the social grant from SASSA, and have limited support systems.
The aim at Milani Day Care is to develop children holistically so that they can reach their full potential and function independently to the best of their ability. The programme includes a broad spectrum of services. These include home visits to build positive relationships and trust between staff members and parents, giving support without taking away the responsibilities of parents.
Gifts in kind are greatly needed at Milani (e.g. nappies, educational toys, food items), as well as volunteers to help with fundraising, maintenance of the building, and more.
